Hot Fall Releases

This fall we've seen several large releases in YA fiction with multiple titles completing or continuing popular series. On November 8th Christopher Paolini will finish off the Inheritance Cycle, a few weeks ago James Dashner completed his Maze Runner series with The Death Cure and Rick Riordan released yet another eagerly anticipated title in the Heroes of Olympus series, The Son of Neptune.

In addition to the return of so many favorite characters several new authors and titles are getting a lot of press. Glow, Amy Kathleen Ryan's first book in the Sky Chasers series has been getting a lot of attention as well as Hourglass by Myra McEntire, and Wisdom's Kiss by Catherine Gilbert Murdock.

Teen Volunteers Needed!

Are you going into grade 7 or above this summer? Do you like working with kids? Do you have a few hours a week available to volunteer between June 27th and August 12th?

Volunteer opportunities include helping with and preparing for craft programs, folding flyers, monitoring children at events, helping decorate for the reading program, working on the teen blog, and more. If you are interested there is a brief (15 minute) orientation meeting on Thursday, June 23rd at 7:00 p.m. Please bring a calender.

I am really excited about some of the new teen titles coming out this spring! Here's a quick preview of some books to watch for in the coming months.

I love Joan Bauer! One of my favorite teen authors. One of her earlier books Rules of the Road was one of the first books that began my journey into children and young adult literature. I laughed out loud reading that book and I can't wait to read her latest!

This book caught my interest several months ago and I've been waiting for the release date. Blundell received a lot of praise for her last book What I Saw and How I Lied and I'm curious to see if this lives up to the hype.

If I Stay is one of my favorite teen novels of all time. I loved every moment spent listening to that book (on audio CD) and I was thrilled to find out there was going to be a sequel. If I could only read one book this spring, this would be it.

* Limit of two entries per teen grades 7-12

* Photos must be taken by a teen and they must be of children/teens/adults/animals reading.

* Each photo must have a name and phone number on the back and be accompanied by a signed entry form (forms are available in the teen area at the library).

*Photos may be in black and white or color.

* Photos may not be larger than 5"x7"; glossy prints preferred.

* Prizes will be awarded!!

* All entries must be received by Friday, July 31st

Winners will be announced on Thursday, August 13th. All photographs will be displayed at the library during the month of September.

Summer Programs for Teens

A Single Shard Book Club
Tuesdays from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Beginning July 7th

Teens will have the opportunity to read and discuss the Newbery Award winning book A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park. Potter Sharon Leary, will then demonstrate the art of making ceramic pots and participants will be encouraged to try skills themselves while making their own pots. We will have the pots fired at the end of the summer and then display them at the library. Registration is required for this program.

Kids n' Teens Knit
Thursday Mornings at 10:30 a.m. Beginning July 9th

Come and learn to knit! Everyone who participates will be working on an 8x8" square which will then be send overseas and made into a blanket through the Knit-a-square program. More information can be found online at www.knit-a-square.com Registration is required for this program.

For each graphic novel that you read from now until the end of August fill out a graphic review form and put it in the jug. At the end of the summer we will have a drawing for a $25 gift certificate to Joe's Comics in Geneseo.

Teen Volunteer Opportunities at the Wadsworth Library

-Summer 2008-

Are you going into grade 7 or above this summer?

Do you like working with kids?

Do you have a few hours a week free to volunteer between

June 30th and August 14th?

Volunteer opportunities include helping with and preparing for craft programs, folding programs, monitoring children at events and helping decorate for the reading program. Also, if there is interest we may begin a summer Teen Book Club.

Slam -Sam is a disarmingly ordinary 15-year-old kid who loves to skate (that's skateboarding, to you and me). But then he is blindsided: his girlfriend gets pregnant, and he lands in the middle of his mum's nightmare (she had Sam when she was 16). Sam, also has a sort-of-imaginary friend: the world's greatest skater, Tony Hawk, whose poster Sam talks to when he has problems. And the poster talks back, maybe, or maybe Sam is just reciting quotes from Tony's autobiography. And is it really Tony who is "whizzing" Sam into the future for glimpses of what is to come?

Forming the backbone of the novel are intense, sometimes brutal events in a small Dutch town in Nazi-occupied Holland and the relationship between the girl's namesake, a member of the Dutch Resistance; Dart, a code operator assigned to help him; and Marijke, the love of his life.

If you answered "yes" to the above questions stop in at the library and pick up a volunteer form! There will be a one-hour orientation meeting on June 21st at 7:00 p.m. Don't forget to bring your calenders!

Volunteer opportunities include working on the Teen Blog, helping and preparing for craft programs, folding flyers, straightening books, monitoring children at summer reading events, and taking pictures of events throughout the summer.

Teen Survey - Fall 2006

A total of 125 teens participated in our Fall Teen Survey.

45% of teens surveyed visit the library more than once a month.
61% of teens surveyed come to the library to find a book for fun, 43% come to do research for school and 42% come to check out video's and DVD's

The top five programs that teens were interested in attending were:

Jewlrey making classes
Cooking classes
Red Cross Babysitter's training
Henna Body Art

The top three magazines teens wanted added to the collection were:

Teen People (Which is no longer avaible in print form only online at: www.teenpeople.com)
Cosmo Girl (we are hoping to add soon!)
Game Pro (we have purchased a subscription for the library!)

We have also purchased Shonen Jump and Seventeen based on popularity in the teen/YA area.

We have recently added over 90 new/popular titles to the YA collection. Come on in and check them out!

Teen Blog Under Construction
